Fa-hoa-tsoung (C) Pháp Hoa tông Ban đầu người ta gọi là Pháp hoa Tông vì tông này lấy Kinh Pháp hoa làm kinh căn bản.Về sau, Thiên Thai Trí giả (531 - 579) có công lớn trong việc truyền kinh Pháp hoa nên các nhà tu học gọi là Thiên Thai Tông. Ở Nhật có hai truyền thống chính: Thiên Ðài tông (Tendai) do Tối Trừng sáng lập và Nhật Liên Tông (Tân Pháp Hoa tông) do Nhật Liên sáng lập. Nhật Liên tông tách ra từ Thiên Ðài tông do Nhật Liên không đồng ý với cách tu kết hợp chỉ quán với niệm Phật và Mật tông của Thiên Ðài tông. Nhật Liên cực lực đả kích các tông phái khác lẫn các kinh điển khác, Ông cho rằng chỉ có Pháp Hoa là kinh điển tối thượng, các kinh khác đều là quyền tạm và đề xướng việc niệm tụng đề mục (daimoku) tức là Nam mô Diệu Pháp Liên Hoa Kinh. Sau này, Nhật Liên Tông lại chia thành nhiều tông, quan trọng nhất là Nhật Liên chánh tông và Sáng Giá học hội.

These are (1) The path of accumulation which emphasizes purifying one's obscurations and accumulating merit. (2) The path of junction or application in which the meditator develops profound understanding of the four noble truths and cuts the root to the desire realm. (3) The path of insight or seeing in which the meditator develops greater insight and enters the first bodhisattva level. Five powers Ngũ lực The five powers obtained by the practice of the five roots of goodness: (1) firm faith in the Buddha and Dharma, (2) great effort, (3) mindfulness, (4) deep concentration, and (5) deep wisdom.

Five precepts Ngũ giới The five precepts for laymen and laywomen; 1. not killing, 2. not stealing, 3. not committing adultery, 4. not telling lies, and 5. not drinking intoxicants.

Five resultant states Ngũ quả môn, xem ngũ nhân môn = five casual practices The five results of the Five Mindful Practices: 1. gate of approach, 2. gate of great assemblage, 3. gate of residence, 4. gate of chamber, and 5. gate of playing ground.

Five rules for reaching Bodhi without retrogression 1. the mind of equanimity towards sentient beings, 2. not envying others' possessions, 3. not criticizing preachers for errors, 4. joyful faith in the Dharma, and 5. not seeking others' respect.

Five wisdoms Ngũ bát nhã trí → yeshe nga (T) → Upon reaching enlightenment, the eight consciousnesses are transformed into the five wisdoms: the mirror-like wisdom, discriminating wisdom, the wisdom of equality, the all-accomplishing wisdom, and the dharmadhatu wisdom.

Fivefold three thoughts toward beggars 1. think that these beggars are good teachers, wish that they will be wealthy when reborn, and think that they assist in your attainment of Bodhi; 2. think of removing your stinginess, think of abandoning everything, and think of seeking all wisdoms; 3. think of following the Tathagata's teaching, not seeking reward, and think of subduing maras; 4. think that they are your relatives, resolve not to discard the four rules of embracing beings, and seek to avoid wrongdoing and abide by righteousness; and 5. think of removing desires, of cultivating compassion, and developing wisdom. The last three thoughts are the most important in this discourse.

Flood at the end of the period of cosmic change Kiếp thủy One of the three calamities which occurs at the end of the world; first, seven suns appear in the sky and burn out the world, then the whole world is flooded with water, and finally, everything in the world is blown away by strong winds.
